Impact of Habitat Fragmentation on Turtle Space Use

The 2010/11 marine heatwave fragmented Shark Bay’s seagrass habitats, impacting green turtles’ (Chelonia mydas) foraging behaviors. Using satellite tags, we found turtles expanded their foraging ranges when high-quality seagrass was sparse. Although this adaptation may increase resilience, it likely comes at an energetic cost, highlighting the importance of habitat configuration in addition to availability when assessing ecological impacts.
