Marine heatwaves, such as the 2010/11 event in Shark Bay, caused the loss of ~1,300 km² of seagrass. Satellite maps from 2002, 2010, 2014, and 2016 revealed increased fragmentation of seagrass after the heatwave, driven by heat stress and water depth. This fragmentation disrupts the ecosystem and delays its recovery. This project focuses on developing a framework for quantifying habitat fragmentation applicable across various ecosystems to identify areas of vulnerability, stability, and recovery.
