Green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) can travel thousands of kilometres from their nesting sites to their foraging grounds. We know that green turtles forage in Shark Bay, but we do not know where most of these animals are coming from. Fortunately, turtles born in different regions can have subtle genetic differences from one another and we can use this information to try and determine where a turtle was born.
This project aims to help develop the procedures and data needed to better understand marine turtle nesting sites and local genetic variation in Shark Bay with conservation implications for the species locally and globally.
